Wienerdog Wednesday, Nothin' Sadder than a Broken Wiener edition

So, yeah. Just when I thought that maybe no other shit was gonna hit the fan, my wiener got broken last Friday.

Scooter Pie has Inter-Vertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), the bane of many long-bodied, short-legged dogs. She has had several episodes since she was a "pup" of 7, but this time it's pretty severe. Initially I was afraid her hindquarters would be paralyzed, but she is slowly regaining stability in her rear.

As much as I love the critter, though, I wouldn't and couldn't pay over $1000 for surgery, especially for a 12-year old dog. So, the conservative therapy is steroids and pain meds and crate rest. Here Scooter is taking a break from the crate and watching a YouTube video of birds, since she hasn't been able to go outdoors and enjoy her birdwatching hobby.

Let's hope Ms. Pie has a swift and complete recovery! And if not complete, we can explore the possibility of getting her her very own Wienermobile:

  1. We went through the same sort of dilemma when we found the dog which is the older of our two now. She was to young and scrappy to put down so we bit the bullet at Virginia Tech school of veterinary medicine and had the surgery done, but you are right age has a lot to do with it. Here to hoping yours recovers as well as our did.

  2. Having some shit in the fan of my own these days, so I can only empathize.

Years ago I had a "most favorite ever" dog I had to have put down. His condition was only going to get worse, and very expensive. So, I bit that bitter bullet reluctantly.

  3. Hugs to you and Scooter Pie Intelli. I have an older dog, a Dalmatian, who is now blind in one eye and tends to mess the house now and then, but we love her way too much to not tolerate those inconveniences for a while longer.

  4. Get well soon, Scooter Pie! I've never met you, but feel like I know you.

  5. To many of us animals are more than pets: $3000 spent for radiation treatments on our Maine Coon Cat (money we could not afford.) We lost him a year later, but we feel better knowing we did for him what we could.

  7. I hate to hear this about little Scooter Pie. And my heart goes out to you as well. I've been there and know how frustrating and heartbreaking it is for the human mommies, especially when we don't have th needed funds to do all that we wish we could do. (((hugs)))

  9. Thanks everyone for the kind thoughts. Scooter Pie thinks she's all better... I guess that counts as progress of some sort.
